‘There Will Be Blood’ (2007)

There Will Be Blood is considered to be one of the best films director and screenwriter Paul Thomas Anderson has ever made. It’s also the film that helped Daniel Day-Lewis earn his second Academy Award for Best Actor. Day-Lewis plays Daniel Plainview, an unscrupulous oil baron in the early 20th century. He’s so conniving that even his decision to adopt H.W. (Russell Harvard) was made because Daniel thought it would help him attract investors.

Daniel’s oil empire hits a snag when he purchases land owned by Paul and Eli Sunday, both of whom are portrayed by Paul Dano. From there, a series of misfortunes set back Daniel’s agenda and grievously wound H.W. and more. That’s just the beginning of Daniel’s reckoning. This man has made a lot of enemies over the years, and they’re coming to collect.

‘The Mask of Zorro’ (1998)

In 1998, director Martin Campbell pulled off the difficult trick of making the pulp hero Zorro exciting for modern audiences. The Mask of Zorro gave the masked hero a dynamic reimagining and cast Anthony Hopkins as Don Diego de la Vega, the original Zorro. After protecting the people of California for decades, Zorro’s secret identity is exposed, and he is imprisoned as his greatest enemy, Don Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson), takes his infant daughter, Elena, as his own.

Two decades later, Don Diego escapes and encounters a thief, Alejandro Murrieta (Antonio Banderas), who has his own grudge against Don Montero. Under the guidance of Don Diego, Alejandro takes up the mantle of Zorro, and the men plot their revenge on Montero. However, the presence of a now grown-up Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and sinister plans for California complicate Zorro’s next move.

‘Labyrinth’ (1986)

Muppets fans must have been shocked when they saw how dark Jim Henson‘s Labyrinth was in 1986. That may explain why it failed at the box office, but the film has become a cult classic over the last four decades. Henson’s creations are used throughout the movie, but the two primary performers, Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie, add depth to the film with their compelling performances.

Connelly plays Sarah Williams, a teenage girl who resents her infant half-brother, Toby (Toby Froud). That doesn’t mean she literally wanted the goblin king Jareth (Bowie) to snatch Tobey from this world. To reclaim her sibling, Sarah has a limited time to make her way through Jareth’s labyrinth. If she fails, her brother will become a goblin, and Sarah may never make it back to the human world.
