Lucy Liu is aware there’s a “high bar” for the Devil Wears Prada sequel, but she’s confident the film can bring it.
“I think what I’m excited about is for them to get that sense of nostalgia and to feel more than sated by it,” Liu, 57, exclusively told Us Weekly on Thursday, April 9, while promoting her partnership with Pfizer on the Every Breakthrough Matters campaign. “Because when you go in to see a sequel, the expectations are even higher. When you see a movie, when it’s original, you don’t really know what you’re going to get.”
She continued, “So there is a high bar for this, and I think that there’s going to be a great feeling of expectation, but I really feel like they’re going to want to see it more than once.”
Liu is among the new cast members of Devil Wears Prada 2, which sees Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway)’s return to the famed Runway magazine as Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) navigates a new media landscape. The pair, who were once at odds, reconnect with Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt) for help on the struggling brand.
When asked what the best part about working with Hathaway is on the film, Liu gushed, “Just how easy both her and Meryl are.”
“Nobody’s dashing onto the set,” she explained. “Everyone shows up when they’re supposed to show up. There’s no sense of entitlement from anyone. There’s just an ease. And I think that’s what a work environment should be, because it eventually is a family environment, because you spend so much time together, whether it’s in a day or a week or months that cross. I think it shows a great sense of professionalism. And I admire that very much.”

In the classic 2006 OG film (based on Lauren Weisberger’s novel of the same name), fans watched as the characters brought the fashion — and the highly-anticipated sequel is turning out to be no different.
“I did not get to keep my fashion from it, but it is forever emblazoned in film, so it’s there,” Liu said. “So everyone gets to keep that fashion for themselves.”
When she’s not gearing up for the premiere of Devil Wears Prada 2, Liu can be found partnering with Pfizer on the Every Breakthrough Matters campaign to encourage others to join the collective fight against cancer and raise awareness of the importance of early detection through cancer screening.
For Liu — who received a false positive breast cancer diagnosis — the partnership is a “reminder of what happened” and that it “doesn’t have to happen for other people.”
“Health is not just about eating healthy and going to the gym. It’s also about screenings and having a regular checkup and also just showing up, because we get so busy, but then we don’t advocate for ourselves,” she told Us. “That’s something, I think, that’s getting lost. Even though we have so much technology, a lot of people are going online, and they’re diagnosing themselves, and that is something that may work, but I don’t think that overall, we have the technology to do a mammogram or really get ourselves checked in a way that’s going to be preventative for ourselves in the future.”
The Devil Wears Prada 2 hits theaters on Friday, May 1.
