Will There Be a Season 3 of The Pitt? What to Know About the HBO Series

The Pitt swept the 2026 awards season after its gripping story lines and dynamic cast performances, leaving fans eager to see more.

The medical drama, created by R. Scott Gemmill and executive produced by John Wells and Noah Wyle, premiered on HBO Max in January 2025. The series chronicles the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center’s emergency room doctors, students and residents as they work a high-pressure, fast-paced shift led by Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch (Wyle).

Season 2 of the hit series premiered in January 2026, with Wyle once again at the helm alongside a strong ensemble cast, including Patrick Ball, Katherine LaNasa, Supriya Ganesh, Fiona Dourif, Taylor Dearden, Isa Briones, Gerran Howell and Shabana Azeez.

For Wyle, authenticity and accuracy are at the heart of The Pitt.

“We talk to people that specifically help practitioners get back their medical degrees after they have gone on a road of recovery for a drug and alcohol substance abuse problem,” Wyle told PBS News of scripting the show in April 2025. “We have talked to people that deal in human trafficking, people that deal with ICE and immigration and how that’s going to affect emergency rooms, which are no longer considered safe spaces, sanctuary spaces.”

NBC; Max/Warrick Page Noah Wyle‘s newest medical drama The Pitt feels reminiscent of his days playing John Carter on ER — but that doesn’t mean the shows are the same. ER, which aired from 1994 to 2009, followed the inner life of an emergency room in a fictionalized version of Chicago’s real Cook County Hospital. […]

The ER alum continued, “And the last question we ask of these people is, ‘What do you want to see on TV? What’s not on TV that needs to be, from your perspective?’ And we write all the talky-talky stuff, and then we give it to the doctors and say, ‘How would this work?’ And then they write all the technical mumbo jumbo and what the procedures are and who would be doing what. And we take that and marry it together and somehow end up with a show.”

Has ‘The Pitt’ Been Renewed for Season 3?

HBO CEO Casey Bloys announced that The Pitt was renewed for a third season in January 2026.

Noah Wyle Teased ‘The Pitt’ Season 3

While season 2 was still rolling out episodes on HBO Max, Wyle revealed that season 3 was already being imagined by the writers.

“We’re just about to go back into the writing room for season 3,” Wyle told Screen Rant in March 2026. “The first thing we do every season is take a lot of meetings with experts from every vector of healthcare that you could think of and ask them what should be on TV, what would be helpful to the work that they’re doing. We’re just going to begin that process in the next few weeks. And then from that, we’ll pull our stories. Try to get the nail on the head.”

Wyle added, “Are we going to be timely in season 3? Yes. There’s never a shortage of story lines to pull from in an emergency room. And when you have characters that are as rich and diverse and as multidimensional as the ones that we have, it’s very easy to just plot them into the future and figure out what they would be struggling with at that point.”

A Major Season 3 Plot Point Was Discussed

After winning the Actor Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series in March 2026, Wyle told press there’s no “shortage of story lines to pull from in an emergency room” when it comes to season 3. Following a budget bill that led to cuts in health spending, particularly Medicare reductions, in real life, Wyle assured fans that the topic would be addressed further on the show.

“When you have characters that are as rich and diverse and as multi-dimensional as the ones that we have, it’s very easy to just sort of plot them into the future and figure out what they would be struggling with at that point,” he said. “But, obviously, these cuts in Medicare, the ones that are going to affect Americans and put them off the rolls, hospital closures, there’s all sorts of very pressing issues that are facing hospitals and health care workers in America, and we’ve only scratched the surface.”

Which Cast Members Will Appear on Season 3 of ‘The Pitt’?

While no official casting announcements have been made just yet, Ball hinted that his character Dr. Langdon’s addiction and recovery story line would continue in season 3.

“I am very excited for season 3, because it is a story that requires a third act,” he told Esquire in February 2026.

Will ‘The Pitt’ Season 3 Take Place on a Holiday?

The first two seasons of The Pitt took place 10 months apart, with season 2 being set on 4th of July. But fans shouldn’t expect season 3 to follow suit with the holiday theme.

“Probably not,” Wyle told Variety in January 2026 when asked if the next season will be holiday-adjacent. “Although we might not push it so far into the future this time — 10 months was a long jump. I don’t think we need to make that long of a jump next time.”

New episodes of The Pitt air on HBO Max Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET.
